Sustainable Spaces: en route to a better future.

At Spaces, we want to lower our carbon footprint and ease our impact on the earth. We strive to create a sustainable business and make our buildings  more eco-friendly and green. What have we done so far? Plastic straws are becoming outlawed, more people use their own (Spaces branded) reusable coffee cup and recycle bins make it possible to repurpose garbage. Spaces Zuidas is a good example of how far we’ve come in The Netherlands: the building completely switched over to LED-lighting and we love to embrace natural lighting via our huge glass atriums. The majority of our design furniture comes with a sustainable quality mark and at our Dutch offices we’re already fighting food waste by making people happy with our surplus meals for a reduced rate via the Too Good To Go-app. And these are just a few examples of Spaces’ journey to become sustainable. Of course, there’s always room for improvement – but in this blogpost you’ll read about our greenest locations so far.

You spin me right ’round, baby

You’ll have to wait a bit for this new treasure to open its doors, but when it does you’ll find yourself in a revolutionary space where old meets new: Spaces Tour & Taxis. The building will be situated in the sustainably renovated, monumental building The Gare Maritime, just North of Brussels city centre. The redevelopment of the covered office- and retail space is a model of circular construction, where the original wood and paving stones of the old freight station will be reused; new retail constructions will be built with responsible, sustainable produced wood; photovoltaic solar panels will be placed to power the old station, rainwater will be recycled for plumbing, and the indoor gardens will improve the air quality.

So, from the beginning of March, we’d love you to show you this inspiring campus ground where corporate buildings and green parks go hand in hand with food and retail outlets. There’s even a day nursery. Come check out this new kid on the block which serves as a great breeding ground for innovative creatives and like-minded entrepreneurs,  for you to meet and connect with. A place that will feel more like your new city quarter, than just another grey office block.

Where sharing is actually caring

Via an online portal, Spaces Zuidas continuously collects data of the use of gas and electricity consumption at the Spaces Zuidas building. Spaces itself has full control over the usage of gas and electricity, and based on last year’s measures we decided to completely switch to LED-lighting last year. This ‘led’ to an immediate decrease of consumption and costs. And since a few years, Spaces embraces the new mobile sharing concept via offering available electric sharing cars, e-scooters and e-bikes on site to limit your personal emissions.

LEED the way

Welcome to Waterkloof: a green eastern suburb of Pretoria, South-Africa. Spaces Menlyn Maine is housed in an energy efficient building that is developed with the green certification program of Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) and according to the Green Star SA standards. A mouth full, but it implies that constructing, rebuilding and designing are done environmentally responsible and that our resources are used efficiently. Our Spaces building in Pretoria is a good example of Spaces’ journey to becoming more green. Plug into the energy that this social hub offers and meet other creative workers.

These blinds will adjust to the position of the sun so that it will give you the best natural lighting possible.

Soak up the San diego sun

OK, so we know it’s rude to brag, but were just going to say it: we are very proud of our brand-new Spaces location opening in San Diego: Spaces Makers Quarter. And what’s even more awesome is its sustainable architecture, with its solar-panelled roof and adjustable blinds. This way the office makes optimal use of the Californian weather with its abundance of daylight that streams right in. “The building has been awarded with the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Platinum (LEED) certification – the only building in downtown with this status’ says Krista Hoggard, IWG’s Area Sales Manager.
