The Art of Work Recap Part I

Employer branding

On September 13th, The Art of Work first offline edition ever took place at Spaces Vijzelstraat, a new series of events brought to you by Spaces and Homerun. The topic of the evening is one that consumes much time and energy of many entrepreneurs nowadays: Employer Branding. We learned that every company has an Employer Brand, even though, usually these Employer Brands are not set up on purpose and usually develop over the years. Unfortunately, not all Employer Brands are as strong as they should be, even though it’s very important to have a good one. It will keep your company healthy, it will attract the right talent quicker and it keeps your retention high. So here’s a recap of the Art of Work: Employer Branding  event, to refresh your memory on how to imply Employer Branding at your company.

Let’s recap.

During the event, we listened to different experts from diverse business fields. In part I, we observed Rick Pastoor, one of the first employees of Blendle and  Rindor Golverdingen, co-founder and creative director at Vruchtvlees. Below a short recap on what we can take away from their experiences.

Vruchtvlees

At Vruchtvlees they didn’t really think about their company’s Employer Brand, it was very important for the brand to focus on the design and the quality of the work. They have made the purpose of the brand the best Employer Branding aspect. Realising the potential of the clients and their company is what they’re constantly improving and that is a huge part of their work culture. Their work environment is the main focus on how they show their Employer Branding towards their clients. At Vruchtvlees they help the client with discovering their own identity. Also, Rindor says, for Employer Branding it is important to help their employees develop their own skills, as they want to lift them to the next step, even though that might not be within Vruchtvlees. This is necessary to show other employers that Vruchtvlees is eager to let people grow, and this is beneficial for Employer Branding.

Blendle

Rick taught us it’s crucial to keep your goal and your product in mind whilst thinking of defining your culture and Employer Branding. What Blendle did, is actually quite extraordinary. When their HR person wanted to leave the company to go traveling for one year, he wrote a handbook about everything HR does and Blendle did something with it that no other company has done before: they published it publicly. This handbook was hugely successful for other people to learn about Employer Branding. We were even lucky enough to pick up a scoop: they’re making a handbook on diversity at the office.
