Hungary for more? Spaces is bringing its coworking offices to Budapest

People talking at Spaces reception

From the grandeur of Buda Castle to the majesty of Liberty Bridge, the Hungarian capital’s rich architectural heritage tells the story of Europe in dramatic form. But this isn’t a city that rests on its laurels: today, café culture is thriving, wine bars are popping up on every corner – and the startup scene is buzzing with opportunity.

Budapest in motion

That’s where Spaces comes in, with two new coworking locations launching this autumn. In October and November, Spaces White House opens its art-deco doors on Vaci Road in the city centre. Sweeping through the open-plan lobby to a suite of designer meeting rooms and communal workspaces, it’s clear this is a building that’s meant for business in the 21st century. High-speed Wi-Fi, can-do staff and plenty of plugs in within our shared office spaces ensure there’s everything you need to get things done your way.

Outside, the tree-lined street offers plenty of options for downtime, lunchtime and playtime alike. Boutiques beckon with local designers, eating is a delight with Hungary’s famously characterful food, and the bar scene provides the perfect backdrop for client drinks or a post-work pick-me-up. Best of all, bus and subway services mean you’re always able to get where you want, when you want. Like it says on the Spaces White House window: “Welcome home. Oops, we meant, ‘Welcome to work.’”

Modern business in the historical heart

Opening in November, Spaces Corvin Towers confounds expectations with a modern building in the city’s historic heart. Found on the top three floors, this flexible and fully-equipped location gets plenty of natural light and comes with all the bits and pieces you need to run your business. Private and shared offices are there for those looking to put down some roots, while for those at a more flexible stage in their careers there are meeting rooms available for hire. And like Spaces White House, there’s even an option to have a virtual office in Budapest for mail-handling and telephone-answering.

After-work fun comes with a view here – and you don’t even need to leave the building. Simply head on up to the rooftop terrace to drink in the stunning cityscape as well as the cocktails, and take a moment to network with your fellow entrepreneurs. Back at street level, the nearby Corvin Plaza provides shops, eateries and even a cinema in which to let your mind wander after hours. The Natural History Museum is a short stroll away, and the Corvin Dumaszinhaz Comedy Club provides light relief when a laugh is in order. The Corvin-negyed subway station, plus bus and tram stops, turn getting into the office into a breeze, while the walking-distance ferry terminal (and option to arrive by boat) transforms a commute into a journey to savour.

Just the beginning

As the first two Spaces-branded locations in this part of Europe, Spaces is sending a strong signal about investing in the East – culturally as well as financially. Part of a plan to expand further throughout the region, the Hungarian capital was the clear winner to spearhead a drive towards coworking by harnessing the entrepreneurial spirit that’s become such a big part of the nation’s identity.

According to the annual Coworking Europe conference: “Coworking is inexorably disrupting the traditional office model on the whole continent – but the market is far from being homogeneous”. Nowhere is this more in evidence than Budapest, making Spaces White House and Spaces Corvin Towers welcome additions to a startup scene that’s buzzing with possibility.
