How the weather affects the workforce.

One of the things, even with all the modern technology, we still can’t control is the weather. Of course, we can predict it and thus prepare for rain or storms, however we just need to deal with it. Every continent, or even every country, has its own weather issues. Some countries even know large extremes between its own regions. In the north of Italy there are mountains to ski, in the south it can be scorching in summertime.
The thing is, people adjust to the weather and often know how to deal with it, especially when the weather is ‘behaving’ as expected.

But what to do when the weather surprises you, and provides you with an extreme situation you didn’t anticipate on? What should an employer do when the weather makes it difficult for office workers to do their work properly?

When winter arrives, the roads can get slippy, icy or even snowed. We share some tips when the snow covers it all:

  • During these circumstances it’s best not to expect employees to be promptly on time and show some leniency when tardy.  They don’t need the added stress of an angry boss when manoeuvring in heavy snowstorms.
  • Offer your people to work from home if the conditions to commute are too severe. Trust your people to know how to manage their time.
  • Send them home early. If the weather takes a nasty turn and people get too worried about how to get home, they lose focus anyway. Better to have a rested and relaxed employee the next day.
