Multiployment or the fluidity of careers

Our parents often had one job in their professional life, of course, they made promotions or switched employers but overall their job stayed the same. The idea of switching careers or changing career paths completely was very daunting for that generation. This is very different for the current younger workforce. They get an education but they also like to learn more skills. People no longer limit what they do by the degree they have. They find ways to use their skills and create jobs for themselves. It is no longer a rarity that  someone has a degree in marketing but is also a good photographer. Or a person who works in finance but also maintains a travel blog. When a person is able to create a job from their skill, they are able to add a new level to their career. This is multiployment; being able to work several different jobs simultaneously. Different jobs that are often not related but speak to the varies skillsets of the individual.

Full fulfillment

Multiployment makes the whole “building a career” very different than the traditional way of thinking. It is more about having a fluid career, go in the direction that suits best rather than go for a step up in the career ladder. This is very much in line with how people view their work. We’ve all heard the phrase ‘love what you do, do what you love’ and multiployment often creates that feeling for most. One job that fulfills the intellectual mind and another that lets the creative juices flowing.

Not be pigeonholed

How do companies deal with these fluid careers?  Companies and large corporations need to be very agile to deal with employees who have more than one job. Also on dealing with employees who are less interested in promotions and paychecks but more on freedom as a currency. It’s not untested waters, there are some companies that give their employees the freedom, but these are few. But perhaps the future will hold more opportunities for those who want to explore within the corporate world. For now, the multiployed individual is better suited as a parttimer. Co-working spaces are the ideal solution to work from for these persons. Not only does it give you the freedom to work when you want, and how you want, also where you need to be.
